Tips For Making Your Next Move Less Expensive

Blog

When you are packing and moving items, the expense of your move can increase drastically. There are ways to avoid unnecessary expenses when you plan carefully.

Invest In Good Moving Materials

Although you can buy cardboard boxes or find ways to get them for free, they are not always the most economical moving supply. Often plastic storage bins are more economical over time because you do not need tape to seal them, they are sturdier, and they can be reused in any number of ways for many years. Buy large storage bins for lightweight items, such as clothing, bedding, or plush toys. These items can take up a large amount of space, but they are usually lightweight to move.

Put delicate items, such as figurines or dinnerware, with the clothing or bedding. Soft items can cushion your breakables so you do not need to pack them separately and worry about purchasing additional packing material. Use smaller plastic bins for books or heavier items to make them more manageable to lift. Investing in a hand truck can save you from injuries as you move. Furthermore, you can move more items quickly.

Choose Trucks Wisely

When you are only renting a truck for your move, you will need to consider several expenses and how they factor into your budget. Although many truck companies only charge a set fee and mileage for renting the truck for a day, some may change you an hourly rate. To make your money go farther, buy the next largest truck than you believe you will need. Do not forget to factor in the price of gas, since many companies want you to replace any gas you used. It is difficult to gauge exactly how many items you can fit into a truck, and you want to avoid making multiple trips, especially when gas prices are high.

Avoid Overburdening Movers

If you are hiring professional movers, they may charge based on the number of movers and the time it takes to move your items. For example, the base rate may include two movers for two hours. You may need to decide if it is more economical to hire an extra mover to make the move faster or book fewer movers for longer. Unless it is necessary for you to avoid helping, this is not the time to sit back and relax. At minimum, you want to have the majority of your items packed and in an accessible location, so the mover can simply start loading the truck. If you are moving locally, you might find it is more economical and faster to move many of the smaller items in your own vehicle.

Although moving can be an expensive process, it does not put you into debt. There are ways to save money without sacrificing the quality and speed of your move. Contact a company like Redondo Van & Storage for more information.

World Travelers Simplify!

Traveling all over the world for work often puts me in the lurch; what do I do with all of my belongings? Having a home or an apartment to come home to is great, but if I'm hardly at home, an apartment or mortgage is really not worth it. Thankfully, if I want to move my stuff with me, there are moving companies that will help me pack everything up and put what I don't want and need into storage. I can even ship boxes of my things all the way around the globe, which is a plus when work relocates me for more than a year.
